Introduction
From CPT
Hidden away in Bathwick, on the banks of the River Avon, is the only surviving Georgian lido in the country. Closed over twenty years ago, the Cleveland Pleasure Pools were at one time a favourite summer destination for generations of Bathonians. Now a campaign is underway to re-open the pools for public bathing.
The Cleveland swimming pools in Bath were built at the beginning of the nineteenth century and provided open air bathing for the city's residents until they were closed during the 1970s (although they re-opened temporarily for a short period in the mid-1980s).
Other than a brief and unsuccessful life as a trout farm, they have been closed ever since. In July, 2004 the owners, Bath & North East Somerset Council, put the site up for sale; following lobbying of councillors the sale was put on hold but their future remains uncertain.
Finally, after four years of campaigning, we hope that there is a glimmer of light shining through. Led by the Princes Regeneration Trust, the Cleveland Pools Trust has teamed up with the Trevor Osbourne Property Group to form the Cleveland Pools Alliance and are in discussion with the Council. BID FOR THE POOLS. I am sure most of our supporters will have heard that the Trust has submitted a bid for the pools. This has been done under the auspices of the Prince's Regeneration Trust and in association with Trevor Osborne.
Although meetings have subsequently been held with the Council we have no definite news of the outcome of this bid except to say that if it is accepted then there will be a great deal of work to be done. We will need all the support we can get and will need to know just what you want to see at the site. We will also need lots of lovely money because the most recent plans, incorporating a restaurant and additional buildings, looks like more than doubling the original estimate. JMD
